MURDER, GREED, CORRUPTION, VIOLENCE, EXPLOITATION,
ADULTERY, TREACHERY...
ALL THOSE THINGS WE HOLD NEAR AND DEAR TO OUR HEARTS.
So begins the musical CHICAGO... and creators John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse
never back off from their bold and sinister promise.
The kiss-and-tell tale of Roxie Hart, a nightclub singer who kills her lover;
Velma Kelly the glamorous double-murderess vying to keep her press supremacy;
and Billy Flynn, the slick lawyer who has the power to keep them from death row
and make them in to stars.
The musical, which won the 1998 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production,
includes the songs All That Jazz, Razzle-Dazzle, Class and All I Care About.
Their notoriety sets up Roxie and Velma as
rivals for the public spotlight. The lurid details of their
lives and crimes make them instant celebrities. But neither
stays on top for long, and it becomes a difficult task to
recapture the interest of the public once another sensational
crime has been committed. There's an insatiable appetite
for fresh blood, and, unless Roxie and Velma can come up
with new revelations to keep them on the front page, they
will be quickly forgotten - not only by the general populace,
but by their camera-loving lawyer, as well.
After murdering her lover and trying to pin
it on her hapless husband Amos, ambitious chorus girl Roxie
Hart is sent to prison. Here she meets Velma Kelly - headline
star and murderess. Desperate for fame, fortune and freedom
the women enlist the help of Billy Flynn; a showbiz lawyer
who has never lost a case. Both women will be hung for their
crimes if they lose their cases and neither will stop at
anything to escape execution...
