Cinderella London Coliseum, London, UK Wed, 11th August 2010 - Sun, 15th August 2010 From £10.00*English National Ballet's Cinderella tells everyone's favourite rags-to-riches story. Cinderella is tormented by her spiteful stepsisters and would do anything to attend the Prince's glamorous ball. Rejected, upset and alone, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother intervenes and transforms her into a glittering Princess who shall go to the ball. Prokofiev's uplifting score played by English National Ballet's symphony orchestra together with David Walker's sumptuous costumes and sets conjure up the fairy tale world of Cinderella perfectly. "This award-winning three-act ballet was the first full-length creation from Michael Corder. Interestingly, in this production of Cinderella, the step-sisters are not played by men but women on pointe to take advantage of the great music for their solos. The fact they are no longer purely comedic roles also highlights the plight of Cinderella much more" ...

Cinderella Royal Opera House, London, UK Sat, 10th April 2010 - Sat, 5th June 2010 From £17.00*The story of Cinderella is one of the best-known fairytales, and Frederick Ashton’s full-length version for The Royal Ballet has all its familiar ingredients. A downtrodden young girl, a glass slipper and a handsome prince combine to make the perfect piece of story-telling, and with a fairy godmother around, anything can happen: pumpkins become coaches, rags turn to ball gowns and there’s bound to be a happy ending. Ashton’s ballet draws together a wealth of wonderfully drawn characters, portrayed against the evocative themes and colours of Prokofiev’s great orchestral score. This is a mysterious and magical fantasy world, where the comedy of Cinderella’s pantomime step-sisters – unlucky in looks and love – provides the perfect foil for the developing romance of Cinderella and the Prince. Cinderella is a family event full of the magic of not just of the fairy godmother, but of The Royal Ballet too. ...

Concerto / The Judas Tree / Elite Royal Opera House, London, UK Tue, 23rd March 2010 - Thu, 15th April 2010 From £17.00*Three ballets by Kenneth MacMillan celebrate his unique talent and versatility. MacMillan’s vision has been vital in shaping The Royal Ballet’s style and repertory, and what better way to appreciate his art than with this rare chance to experience three contrasting works in a single performance. Abstract, dramatic, humorous – this programme gives a wonderfully varied introduction not just to MacMillan’s work but to the beauty and dramatic power of ballet itself. Concerto, to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto, contrasts moments of exuberance and elegiac reflection. The Judas Tree places a single woman among 13 men to enact a harrowing event that is recognizably contemporary but with biblical overtones. Its specially commissioned score will be conducted by Music Director of The Royal Ballet Barry Wordsworth. Elite Syncopations completes the programme with a sparkling evocation of a dance hall that brings ragtime rhythms to the dance and a ragtime band to the stage....

Mikhailovsky - Cipollino London Coliseum, London, UK Sat, 17th July 2010 - Sat, 24th July 2010 From £10.00*This ballet enchants you from its very first minute. The harmony of the melodic and ear-catching music by Karen Khachaturian, bright sets and costumes by Valery Leventhal and vivid choreography by Genrikh Mayorov, perfect both for children and for grown-ups, made it a real blockbuster. In London, an extra element is added: specially for the noisy auditorium of chattering youngsters a narrator will deliver the storyline and introduce the characters. The fairy-tale story by Italian author Gianni Rodari tells of the adventures of the Little Onion boy (in Italian, Cipollino), who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable folk (his little girlfriend Radish, old Mr Pumpkin, handyman Master Grape) by the fruit “aristocracy” (foppish Prince Lemon, martinet Signor Tomato and Countesses Cherries). Even though the ballet was created especially for young people, it never lacks “serious” choreography of classical ballet. The principals of the Mikhailovsky Ballet really enjoy themselves turning from Siegfrieds and Odettes into ‘vegetables’ and ‘fruits’. The rhythms of dance, the portrayal and humour of the characters and the exceptional performances will keep everyone enthralled. Please note: there are no surtitles in this production...

Mikhailovsky - Giselle London Coliseum, London, UK Thu, 15th July 2010 - Fri, 16th July 2010 From £15.00*The stage life of Giselle wasn't an easy one. After the premiere of 1841 featuring Carlotta Grisi and Lucien Petipa, the ballet was performed in France till 1863, when it disappeared from the repertoire. Giselle was forgotten in its motherland but became a most frequently shown ballet on the Russian stage. In 1842, the ballet was staged in St.Petersburg. At the beginning of the 20th century during the ground-breaking Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons, the French saw their national ballet, faithfully nurtured in Russia. The Mikhailovsky Theatre’s 2008 production of Giselle by Nikita Dolgushin, a specialist in historical works, managed to amaze both the public and the critics. Dolgushin, a noble Albrecht in his time as a dancer, inspired the creation of the ballet and delicately united dance and pantomime. The choreographer revealed the essence of the romantic ballet: the story of Giselle is told in the language of ballet classicism. Together with Vyacheslav Okunev, who designed the epitome of romantic settings, Dolgushin created a production that was described by a British critic ‘an exemplary Giselle’. Please note: there are no surtitles in this production....

Mikhailovsky - Laurencia London Coliseum, London, UK Tue, 20th July 2010 - Wed, 21st July 2010 From £10.00*The Mikhailovsky Theatre presents the revival of Vakhtang Chabukiani’s masterpiece Laurencia, based on the play Fuente Ovejuna by Lope de Vega. Chabukiani was one of the first to create a new choreographic language by means of his own particular blend of folk dance and classical ballet. In his ballet to the music by Alexander Krein, Chabukiani asserted the importance of male dance, furthering in particular the notion of the “heroic” style. Laurencia was premiered of 1939 at the Kirov Theatre. Leading parts were performed by Natalia Dudinskaya (Laurencia), Vakhtang Chabukiani (Frondoso) and Tatiana Vecheslova (Pascuala). In 1956 the ballet was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre where Vakhtang Chabukiani partnered Maya Plisetskaya. In 2010, London will be the first city in the world to witness this historical revival of the famous ballet, after a fifty year absence from stage, in a new full-length production created for the Mikhailovsky by Mikhail Messerer. Please note: there are no surtitles in this production....

This is a revival of the historical Bolshoi Theatre staging in 1956 - an exquisite production with choreography by Alexander Gorsky and Asaf Messerer. The triumphal restaging of this Swan Lake at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in September 2009 was devised by Mikhail Messerer, the company’s ballet master in chief. The epoch of Alexander Gorsky saw the next phase in the evolution of dance following the ballet classicism of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The staging boasts the superb sets and costumes by renowned Russian theatre designer of Georgian origin, Simon Virsaladze. The legend of a young prince finding his true love, a swan princess bewitched by an evil genius, offers all the dancers of the company a great opportunity to show their talents. Please note: there are no surtitles in this production...
