From £10.00*Ballet Central is proud to bring their 25th anniversary tour to The Lowry, offering a varied programme of ballet, contemporary and jazz from some of the world’s leading choreographers. The 2010 repertoire features David Nixon’s Song to St Andrew, Christopher Bruce’s Shift and excerpts from Peter Wright’s Giselle and Michael Pink’s Dracula. Kit Holder, Louise Bennett and past graduate Christopher Marney are creating new pieces for this tour, and the School’s Director Sara Matthews will be reviving Dances from a Knot Garden. Michael Pink’s dramatic narrative piece I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire and Phillip Aiden’s Let Yourself Go complete this exciting programme.* Philip Feeney, Musical Director, will provide live accompaniment during the tour. Ballet Central has been the performing company of Central School of Ballet since 1984. During its 30 years, Ballet Nacional de España has performed in some of the most renowned theatres in the world and received some of the highest accolades including the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes, awarded to artistic director Jose Antonio in 2005 by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. For their performances at the London Coliseum, the company perform two of their best loved works. Dualia was choreographed by two of flamenco's hottest stars Rojo and Rodriguez, and explores the sensuality of looks and caresses through movement and music. La Leyenda (The Legend) was choreographed by the company's artistic director José Antonio as a tribute to the famous flamenco star Carmen Amaya who died in 1963. The piece portrays images from her life – from the slums of Barcelona to the glamour of performing on the American stage in the 30s and 40s....

In this creative, personalised, unique project Sonia Gomez gets to know a male volunteer for several weeks before her performance; exploring his desires, interests, fascinations – from art to travel, to body image, fantasy and more. Using dance, film, photography, music – whatever is appropriate to enhance the show. Sonia then creates a pilot TV programme, but for the stage. The harmony of the melodic and ear-catching music by Karen Khachaturian, bright sets and costumes by Valery Leventhal and vivid choreography by Genrikh Mayorov, perfect both for children and for grown-ups, made it a real blockbuster. In London, an extra element is added: specially for the noisy auditorium of chattering youngsters a narrator will deliver the storyline and introduce the characters. The fairy-tale story by Italian author Gianni Rodari tells of the adventures of the Little Onion boy (in Italian, Cipollino), who fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable folk (his little girlfriend Radish, old Mr Pumpkin, handyman Master Grape) by the fruit “aristocracy” (foppish Prince Lemon, martinet Signor Tomato and Countesses Cherries). Even though the ballet was created especially for young people, it never lacks “serious” choreography of classical ballet. The principals of the Mikhailovsky Ballet really enjoy themselves turning from Siegfrieds and Odettes into ‘vegetables’ and ‘fruits’. From £15.00*The stage life of Giselle wasn't an easy one. After the premiere of 1841 featuring Carlotta Grisi and Lucien Petipa, the ballet was performed in France till 1863, when it disappeared from the repertoire. Giselle was forgotten in its motherland but became a most frequently shown ballet on the Russian stage. In 1842, the ballet was staged in St.Petersburg. At the beginning of the 20th century during the ground-breaking Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons, the French saw their national ballet, faithfully nurtured in Russia. The Mikhailovsky Theatre’s 2008 production of Giselle by Nikita Dolgushin, a specialist in historical works, managed to amaze both the public and the critics. Dolgushin, a noble Albrecht in his time as a dancer, inspired the creation of the ballet and delicately united dance and pantomime. The choreographer revealed the essence of the romantic ballet: the story of Giselle is told in the language of ballet classicism. Together with Vyacheslav Okunev, who designed the epitome of romantic settings, Dolgushin created a production that was described by a British critic ‘an exemplary Giselle’. From £10.00*The Mikhailovsky Theatre presents the revival of Vakhtang Chabukiani’s masterpiece Laurencia, based on the play Fuente Ovejuna by Lope de Vega. Chabukiani was one of the first to create a new choreographic language by means of his own particular blend of folk dance and classical ballet. In his ballet to the music by Alexander Krein, Chabukiani asserted the importance of male dance, furthering in particular the notion of the “heroic” style. Laurencia was premiered of 1939 at the Kirov Theatre. Leading parts were performed by Natalia Dudinskaya (Laurencia), Vakhtang Chabukiani (Frondoso) and Tatiana Vecheslova (Pascuala). In 1956 the ballet was staged at the Bolshoi Theatre where Vakhtang Chabukiani partnered Maya Plisetskaya. In 2010, London will be the first city in the world to witness this historical revival of the famous ballet, after a fifty year absence from stage, in a new full-length production created for the Mikhailovsky by Mikhail Messerer. After the party and finding himself alone he goes hunting. The evil magician Rothbart (half man half bird) keeps beautiful women as swans on the lake - but by night they resume human form. Siegfried is bewitched by Odette, a Princess and one of the Swans. She explains their plight to Siegfried and says the spell can only be broken by someone who'll love her truly for ever. He swears to do so but Odette returns to being a swan as Rothbart's powers are so strong. Siegfried returns to the palace and his mother presents him with a string of women from whom to chose his bride - Rothbart arrives with his daughter Odile disguised as Odette and Siegfried agrees to marry her - only then realising his mistake as Odile reviles him for breaking his vow to Odette. Siegfried returns to the lake and begs Odette to forgive him - then fights Rothbart whom he kills - and the swans are released from the spell....

The six performers interfere or seemingly assist each other’s ‘solo moment’, together inhabiting an imagined domestic space. Woking Dance Festival Associate Artist and Jerwood Award winner, Yael Flexer’s distinctive choreography effortlessly weaves wry humour and informal banter with dance that is fast paced and emotionally driven. Prefaced by a short performance from young dance students from Winston Churchill School and the University of Surrey who have been working with the company. Yael Flexer & Nic Sandiland, Dance & Digital Works (Formerly Bedlam Dance Company) Yael and Nic create live works for stage as well as site-specific and gallery based digital installations. Their performances generate of a sense of intimacy in live performance and digital installation in a way which cleverly acknowledges the physicality and presence of the viewer. The work is made through a collaborative process with performers and involves commissions of music and design. Yael has been recently awarded a bursary from the University of Chichester towards MPhil/PhD practice-based research and also directs mapdance, the University’s postgraduate touring company. Nic is currently developing a site-specific project, Weather Dances for landmark buildings around the UK. ...
