Charlatan King's Head Theatre, London, Kings Head Pub Islington, UK Sun, 12th September 2010 - Mon, 20th September 2010 From £15.00*CHARLATAN is a lush, sexy and painfully revealing memoir of the life of Sergei Diaghilev, considered the 20th Century’s greatest impresario. Diaghilev created the Ballets Russes which he brought to Paris in 1909, inspiring a cultural revolution which still resonates through our culture today. Weaving a glorious tapestry, with sets by Picasso, music by Stravinsky and costumes by Chanel to highlight the best dancers in the world, there has never been anything to match this explosion of artistic expression. A wonderful exhibition of his theatrical achievements and still spreading influence is presently on view at the Victoria and Albert Museum. What you won't find there is a sometimes painful examination of his tumultuous love affair with Nijinsky, probably the greatest male dancer of all time. The memoir details this and also the dancer's ultimate descent into madness at a heartbreakingly early age. One reviewer in New York enthusiastically remarked on the selections of music that played softly behind some of the most vivid passages in this piece. There was no music. Only the words! Emblematic quote from the show: "On all of life's journey it is of the utmost importance to travel first class." THE CRITICS: ‘…brilliant evocation… superb actor… ranks with the best of the genre.’ MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE ‘…vivid descriptions that beautifully capture Paris Premieres.’ NEW YORK TIMES ...

From The House Of The Dead Lyric Theatre, The Lowry, The Lowry, UK Thu, 19th May 2011 - Thu, 19th May 2011 From £15.00*A volatile mix of restless tension and the crushing boredom experienced within the confines of a prison camp, this is Big Brother for its time. The prisoners, forced to live together in close proximity and with little stimulation, create a complex community that is rife with rivalries and dependencies. Janacek’s last and most powerful opera is based on the Dostoyevsky novel of the same name – written as a fictionalised account of the author’s years in a Siberian prison. The opera opened two years after the composer died at the age of 74 and weaves a plot through themes of freedom and captivity set to a richly evoking music score. Three male characters dominate and are brought to the fore in the strong singing and acting abilities of Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts as Filka Morozov, last seen at Opera North in the award-winning Peter Grimes (2006), Alan Oke (Bob Boles, Peter Grimes 2006) as Skuratov and Robert Hayward, who sang the gritty role of Scarpia to much acclaim in the 2008 production of Tosca, as Siskov. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. The performance lasts approximately three hours and fifteen minutes including a twenty minute interval. The blackest of Mozart's comedies, Don Giovanni charts the last 24 hours in the life of the legendary seducer Don Juan, before he meets his heaven-sent end in a closing scene of hell and damnation that remains one of the most profoundly shocking moments in opera. Directed and designed by the award winning team behind the 2009 Festival’s spectacular staging of Purcell's The Fairy Queen, Glyndebourne's long-awaited new production of Mozart's most demonic masterpiece is conducted by the new Music Director of Glyndebourne on Tour, the young Czech-born maestro Jakub Hruša. It was premiered at Teatro di Giovanni e Paolo in Venice in 1642 and was given its first professional production at Glyndebourne in 1962. The plot, by librettist Busenello, is suggested in the prologue with the apparent triumph of Love over Virtue and Fortune. Love, reflected through Nerone’s blind infatuation for the amoral and relentlessly ambitious Poppea, is powerfully illustrated in one of the most beautiful love duets ever written at the conclusion of this masterpiece. Photographs by Mike Hoban....

Glyndebourne: La Cenerentola Milton Keynes Theatre, Milton Keynes, UK Wed, 10th November 2010 - Sat, 13th November 2010 From £21.00*La Cenerentola by Gioachino Rossini. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. Rossini's take on the Cinderella story is no simplistic fairy tale. There's no pumpkin coach and no glass slipper, and in place of a fairy godmother there’s a wise old philosopher who wants his handsome Prince to marry not just the fairest of them all but also the best and the kindest. Yet, while reason and realism prevail, there's no shortage of magical enchantment in Rossini's miraculous score, which happily marries high comedy and heartfelt emotion, before climaxing with one of the most dazzling coloratura showpieces in all bel canto opera. The critics adored Sir Peter Hall's 2005 Festival staging: 'This is a performance that meets the Glyndebourne gold standard … understated, sensitive and thus deeply pleasurable' (The Daily Telegraph); 'sheer entertainment kissed by genius' (The Mail on Sunday). For this revival, we welcome back the stylish Spanish maestro Enrique Mazzola, conductor of L'elisir d’amore on the 2007 Tour. ...

Director David Pountney is a prime mover is this revival and will direct the Company’s production. The major role of Nikita, Chartkov’s servant, is sung by Richard Burkhard, seen most recently as Sir Despard in 2010’s Ruddigore. This is a telling picture of the corrupt world of art and fashion - a powerful opera that emerges as a cautionary tale of our times. Sung in English Lasts approximately 2 hours 30 minutes...

They murder and rape; burn the village and abduct the children to be sold into slavery. Twelve year old Mende Nazer was one of them. In 2000, after seven years she was passed on to a family in London, where she escaped, only to face a new struggle for political asylum. This unique production by award winning Feelgood is told as a feast of storytelling, music and dance by an outstanding ensemble of African and British performers. It celebrates Mende’s indomitable spirit, the beauty of the ancient Nuba culture, and as a famine of the inhumanity and horror of the hidden contemporary slave trade. Mende’s story challenges us all to consider, what is it to be free? Reviews: “All the clichés of such survival stories are inadequate to describe the emotional impact of her eventual deliverance… told in Mende’s voice with great beauty” The Observer (Slave) “Ripe with vivid images, exquisite African a capella harmonies and drumming, it reverberates deep in your soul… definitely in the un-missable category”. ***** The Guardian (Feelgood’s’ Romeo and Juliet) ...

As with all MaD productions, it is multi-media ~ aimed at a wide audience ~ for people who might like to go to the match; or watch bands; or simply people who generally appreciate modern culture. This production will feature music, as well as c...
