Lotty's War The Plaza, Stockport Plaza Mon, 8th March 2010 - Tue, 9th March 2010 From £15.00*The German presence in Guernsey is one of the comparatively obscure episodes of World War II, even for some present-day islanders. Realising his ignorance, St Peter Port writer Giuliano Crispini embarked on some solid research in the name of preserving the heritage of fellow Guerns. Michael Fenner and Katie Howell in Lotty's War at the Greenwich Playhouse, London Photo: Iain Davie Under Iain Davie’s direction, his play also exploits to the full the dramatic tension inherent in occupation as the simple classifications of enemy and friend are blurred by deeper acquaintance. After a burst of horse-play accompanied by Guernsey French, we’re soon drawn into the inevitable love story between a commandant and a woman he commandeers along with her home, faithfully recreated by David Crisp’s era-evocative set. Part composed young woman, part rebellious teenager, Lotty (Katie Howell) is fiery and defiant in ankle socks and a faded print dress. Michael Fenner is persuasive and convincing as the occupying general Rolf, with his perfect command of English idiom and even of English humour.
