Slave Quays Theatre, The Lowry, The Lowry Tue, 23rd November 2010 - Sat, 27th November 2010 From £16.00*In the remote Nuba Mountains of Sudan, life is still a good fire around which stories are told, until the men on horseback come. They murder and rape; burn the village and abduct the children to be sold into slavery. Twelve year old Mende Nazer was one of them. In 2000, after seven years she was passed on to a family in London, where she escaped, only to face a new struggle for political asylum. This unique production by award winning Feelgood is told as a feast of storytelling, music and dance by an outstanding ensemble of African and British performers. It celebrates Mende’s indomitable spirit, the beauty of the ancient Nuba culture, and as a famine of the inhumanity and horror of the hidden contemporary slave trade. Mende’s story challenges us all to consider, what is it to be free? Reviews: “All the clichés of such survival stories are inadequate to describe the emotional impact of her eventual deliverance… told in Mende’s voice with great beauty” The Observer (Slave) “Ripe with vivid images, exquisite African a capella harmonies and drumming, it reverberates deep in your soul… definitely in the un-missable category”. ***** The Guardian (Feelgood’s’ Romeo and Juliet)
