| Billy Elliot is
the tale of a young boy's dream set in the North East.
The story is heart-warming, funny and a feel-good celebration.
It captured the hearts of everyone around the world
when the movie was released in October 2000. The film broke
box office records worldwide, won wide acclaim and was nominated
for a number of awards including 3 Golden Globes, 3 Oscars
and 13 Baftas.
The award winning creative team from the original
film inlcude director Stephen Daldry, writer Lee
Hall and choreographer Peter Darling are
joined by music legend, Elton John, the
most celebrated UK singer song-writer of the last 30 years,
to create the most eagerly anticipated musical of the decade.
The movie marked the cinematic debut of theatre
director Stephen Daldry. Additionally he directed Billy
Elliot the Musical for which Hall has written the book and
Elton John the score.
The setting is County Durham in 1984, and things "up
north" are even grimmer than usual: the miners' strike is
in full rancorous swing, and 11-year-old Billy's dad and
older brother, miners both, are on the picket lines. Billy's
got problems of his own. His dad has scraped together the
fees to send him to boxing lessons, but Billy has discovered
a different aptitude: a genius for ballet dancing. Since
admitting to such an activity is tantamount, in this fiercely
macho culture, to holding up a sign reading "I Am Gay," Billy
keeps it quiet. But his teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson thinks he
should audition for ballet school in London. Family ructions
are inevitable.
